Wednesday Round Up

September 4

For the past few months many people have been up in arms about the NSA and their views on privacy. Big Data decided to show us something about Internet Privacy in another light.  Big Data’s Alan Wiklis said “Facehawk is provocative, compelling and almost forces you to have an opinion about your personal information being so readily available online,”

One of our own took the plunge to watch years of her Facebook activity come together with music. Despite being slightly glitchy in the beginning watching years of Facebook photos come together is a little overwhelming. Our guinea pig’s (who shall remain nameless) only response, other than a look of terror, was “Why do I wear so many costumes… and why do I let people photograph it.”

With a new movie out and a really just mean-spirited shout out from Taylor Swift at the VMAs One Direction is continuing to win over the hearts of teen girls everywhere.

The newest way they are making those little hearts throb is with perfume.

We had to take a moment after watching the spot for ‘Our Moment’. We know we aren’t the target, but the ruling is out until we get some more opinions so let us know what you think. (If you want to pretend to be a teenage girl… all the better)

To check out more info about how this ad came together and reached 2 million views in only 72 hours take a look at this article.

Apps for road trippin’

One great thing about living in Knoxville is the amount of restaurants in our area. However, not all cities are this lucky. If you’re a fan of road trips like I am, you’ve struggled to find good food to eat while you’re on the go.

Fast Company decided to do something about this delicious food dilemma and created a list of the 10 best Apps, sites, and guides for sustainable travel.

Surviving College

Entering freshman came to the University of Tennessee Saturday, August 17. Since freshman are required to live in the dorms if they are not within driving distance of the campus to commute, this was a rather large change. For most of them, this is the first time living away from home, and it can be scary to say the least. Campus is loud and convoluted during this time. Here are some valuable tips for surviving campus life:

  1. Try to make friends with anyone and everyone you meet

I say this because campus is full of interesting people. You have no idea what you may have in common with someone unless you get to know them. Say hi to strangers that you pass in the dorm halls, or give a warm smile to people as you pass them on your way to class. Strike up conversations. Always remember that friends that you make in college, are typically friends you keep for life.

  1. Flexibility = Responsibility

What I mean when I say this, is that you have to understand this is not high school. True, the class material only advanced a year ahead of where you were the year before. However, no one in college is going to hold your hand as you try to work through it. Professors typically won’t send constant reminders about assignments due. Not all classes require attendance. You have a new flexible environment where you may have several hour breaks between classes, and possibly even a light load when it comes to homework. Just remember though, there is a responsibility you have to yourself and your education.

  1. Make friends with the staff

Secretaries and office assistants, in my opinion, are the entire backbone for what goes on around campus. They know the ins and outs of what their bosses do. Be pleasant with them and they’ll be nice to you. If you have any questions about anything, ask them. They will most likely know, and if they don’t, they’ll know a way to get the information. I also strongly suggest being friendly with the maintenance and custodial staff around campus buildings you frequent. They work very hard and you wouldn’t have the campus environment you do without them. Don’t make their loads any heavier.

  1. Join as many clubs and organizations early on

Look at all the posters and flyers around campus, talk to people about your interests, and join as many organizations as possible. If you feel Greek life is for you, go for it. If you want to go and watch movies, find people and go to the movie showings at the University Center. There are clubs and organizations for everyone. Just remember that joining these early in college make it very easy to make friends and it looks great on a resume!

  1. Take an aptitude test

I cannot stress enough the importance of using the Career Center’s online FREE aptitude test. I was in your shoes 4 short years ago. I had no earthly idea what I wanted to major in, so I decided to take an aptitude test. Some of you may know exactly what you want to major in, now that the university requires students to choose a major upon entering (even if it is exploratory path). However, an aptitude test can give you results you never imagined. It will not only tell you what major you may be fit for, but what career opportunities there are later in life. I for one have a creative mind, and the Advertising Major was at the top of my results. I took a few classes and fell in love with the program. You may change your mind half way through your college career, and that is perfectly normal! The aptitude test is just an easy tool to help you along the way.

Internet For All

According to Mashable article, “Zuckerberg Wants to Bring the Whole Planet Internet Access,” Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg hopes to one day allow the entire globe to fully utilize the “world wide web.” It states that only 2.7 billion people currently have access to internet and can actually afford it.

In order to make this a reality, Zuckerberg and affiliates such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung, created This organization is the start and foundation for a future where hopefully internet will be available to the other two-thirds of the world which cannot access it. On the website, a United Nations Human Rights Council report quotes, “The internet boosts economic, social and political development, and contributes to the progress of humankind as a whole.”

One way of reaching people in the less developed countries, is smart phones which are efficient for running less expensive internet services. According to an article in The New York Times, the organizations behind plan to radically change smartphones and the networks which provide internet to them, so that “they transmit more data while using less battery power.”

Even though this is a fantastic idea to better the world entirely, as well as connect the world globally online, needs the support of other businesses to back it up. “No one company can really do this by itself,” Zuckerberg quotes in The New York Times article. Supporting company Qualcomm is working on a chip for smartphones which will “stretch a phone’s battery life, slice the amount of data needed to transmit a video and extend the reach of mobile networks through tiny devices similar to Wi-Fi It is essential for other businesses to join this movement and even betters the economy as a whole. For instance, Google and Microsoft have their own movements similar to this one, and as gains affiliates, business profits will rise for the companies who can now expand to less developed countries they never dreamed

Media Buying Media

Yahoo bought Tumblr, Facebook bought Instagram and most recently 21st Century Fox invested in Vice Media.

21st_century_fox_logo_new        images-1

Friday, 21st Century Fox (News Corp. has spilt into an entertainment company and a publishing company) invested $70 million to control 5% of  youth centered Vice Media.

Vice is a magazine turned Media mogul catering to a young audience with a mix of news and pop culture. Vulgar, comic, and sarcastic tones are used to in much of Vice’s content which mostly relates to music, fashion, and pop culture; but hard hitting journalism is there as well. With their HBO series which was just renewed for a second season they explore anything international they find interesting from political assassinations to child suicide bombers.

What is first seen as an unusual buy form Murdoch (CEO of 21st Century Fox) due to content may not be so.  David Lieberman from Deadline says “But it gives 21st Century Fox a foothold in a trendy digital media, TV, and publishing company that has captured the imaginations and financial support of former MTV chief Tom Freston, WME’s Ari Emanuel, WPP, and The Raine Group as well as comedian Bill Maher.”

While it’s thought that Fox in dipping into Vice to stay relevant with the younger, pop culture driven market; Vice is also planning to lean on Fox to reach into a wider international market for both their televised, digital, and print media.

AdAge’s Simon Dumeco goes as far as saying “This may end up being the most conservative media deal of the year, folks.”

If Vice’s $125 million made in revenues last year are any indication, I think Fox’s investment will be a positive move for the recently split entertainment company. We’ll have to keep an eye out to see if they try to increase their stake.
